The top 100 most cited scientific papers include those devoted to the density functional theory (DFT), the most quoted theory in physics. The talk will briefly present history of the method, highlight some basic aspects of the electron-electron interaction grasped by the DFT, and illustrate them with examples from the physics of condensed matter. The reasons of popularity of the DFT will also be addressed.
